My Shell

I think my shell looks like the fin of a gurnard. I think that because it has lines on it. They might be the bone lines.
My shell is smooth and soft. that is why I think it is a gurnard fin.
I think it is a rock crab because of the brown and black marks on it. I think it is 28 years old because it has 28 lines on it.
Before Mrs Russell picked up the shell, I've got a funny feeling that it was part of a crayfish bone - an Australian crayfish bone, not a New Zealand crayfish. All the Australian crayfish always have a circulish bone.

  1. I like the way you have described your fish like a gurnard. Wow I have learnt some interesting things about crayfish. I did not know that there was a difference between the Australian and New Zealand crayfish.

I like the way you have descirbed your shell as smooth and soft.

Did you only have 1 shell to look at or more than one?

  2. Mrs Russell said we could have 2 shells if we were good and I was good. We could also do another one if there was time. There was no extra time. I like the way you liked how my shell was soft and smooth. Yes, the Austrialian crayfish is different as it is born from a different species to the New Zealand crayfish.

  4. Hi Madeline,

Thank you for answering my questions. You have made me want to learn more about sea life in and around New Zealand.

    1. Well I don't know a lot about New Zealand seas but I know that the New Zealand crayfish are different to Australian crayfish because I have seen the different bones before.
